Kansas City Vigil in Remembrance of Lawrence King
2/22/2008 7:00 pm-8:00 pm
A 14-year-old boy shot and killed his 15-year-old classmate, Lawrence King, last week in Oxnard, Calif. Friends say it was because of Lawrence?s sexual orientation and gender expression. The shooter has been charged with a hate crime.
What begins as bullying and harassment in school far too often escalates to violence. In GLSEN?s 2005 National School Climate Survey, nearly a fifth (17.6%) of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students report being physically assaulted at school in the past school year because of their sexual orientation and over a tenth (11.8%) because of their gender expression. Nearly two-thirds (64.3%) of LGBT students feel unsafe in school because of their sexual orientation and two-fifths (40.7%) feel unsafe because of their gender expression.
Vigils in memory of Lawrence, calling for an end to violence and harassment directed at lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in schools, are being organized in communities across the country this week. Our hope is that what happened to Lawrence never happens again.
