Kansas City Latino Gay Pride Set for Sept. 8
August 23, 2012
by Monica Soto

Click For Full Size Get ready for some Latin music, free food, and fun. Latino Gay Pride is returning for its fourth consecutive year from 2 to 8 p.m. Sept. 8 in Hyde Park, 38th Street and Gillham Road, Kansas City, Mo.

Mario Canedo, who so far has headed every Kansas City Latino Gay Pride, encourages everyone to come out.

“You don’t have to be Latino to join us to have fun, learn about the Latin culture, and get educated about HIV/AIDS. This celebration is held specifically to increase awareness around HIV/AIDS within the Latino community and to bring attention for Hispanic National HIV/AIDS Awareness Day,” which will be Oct. 15.

Canedo is excited to have a variety of performers this year, particularly Cyon Flare, a popular drag queen who hails from Chicago.

Another favorite, Canedo said, is Julio Fierro, who will perform with 14 band members in the evening. Fierro is in the top five of the Mexican Billboard charts for country-western artists.

The fabulous emcees, Flo and Thalia, will guide you throughout the festival. Local performers featured will include: Juanita, Nicole, Widow VonDu, Seto, Mulan, Javier Alexis and Santos DJ. The main event is free, so you have zero excuse. Bring your friends, family, even the dog!

In addition to the main event, there will be both a kick-off party and an after-party. Unlike the main Saturday event these will have a small door charge, yet to be announced. The kick-off, “Carnaval,” is at 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Social, 1118 McGee St., Kansas City, Mo., and people are encouraged to wear carnival-style attire, like masks and colorful celebratory clothing. The after-party will be at 10 p.m. Sept. 15 — the Saturday after the main event — at Social.
