Help Pick the Winning Film
June 21, 2012
by May Evans

Click For Full Size The Out Here Now Short Film Competition is held each year on closing night of the Kansas City Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, and this is the second year I have served as the curator. But now the spotlight will shift to the audience, because your vote will determine which director receives a $100 cash prize.

After screening scores of submissions and tracking down countless possibilities online, I have selected the five finalists for this year’s competition. The films came from as far as France and as close as Lawrence, Kan.

They run from five to 15 minutes each and show different dimensions of the LGBT experience. As curator, I look for short films that tell a complete story, are visually interesting, and embody a poignant or important LGBT narrative.

This year’s finalists are:

• On the Seventh Day (A woman’s daily routine is radically switched up on Saturdays.)

• The Men’s Room (An encounter in a park bathroom goes in an unexpected direction.)

• Coffee and Pie (Not your average lesbian break-up.)

• Fierce (A trans woman stands up to her father, despite his machismo and judgment.)

• Nothing Happened (Two best friends share a deeper moment. Will it change things between them?)

The short film competition always proves to be a popular and entertaining program. Please join us at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at the Tivoli Cinemas in Westport. There is no admission charge, but your donations at the door will help fund our Out Here Now short film project.
