Holiday Cheers
December 8, 2011
by John Long

Kansas City’s LGBT community is showing its finest work once again in celebrating the holidays. Good Samaritan Project and SAVE Inc. held the fourth annual Holiday Homes Tour in Northeast Kansas City on Dec. 4. The Heartland Men’s Chorus had their festive Gallery of Trees event Nov. 27 at Drexel Hall and performed the sold-out Holiday Glee concerts Dec. 2-4.

The Kansas City Women’s Chorus will be performing their holiday concert, “Joy,” at 8 p.m. on Dec. 10 at the Folly Theater, 300 W. 12th St. (www.kcwomenschorus.org). And the Mid America Freedom Band will entertain us with a free concert at 3 p.m. on Dec. 18 at Unity Temple on the Plaza, 707 W. 47th St. (www.mafbmusic.org).

The gay bars have been hosting events and fundraisers for charities throughout the holidays. Missie B’s and Sidekicks have both kicked off their holiday fundraising with Bartender Revues in November. They will all be great places to spend the holidays and New Year’s Eve. You can find their addresses in the bar listings on page 23 of every issue of Camp.

The Rev. Kurt Krieger and the Spirit of Hope Metropolitan Community Church at 3801 Wyandotte St. have been celebrating Advent and the holidays, as have many of Kansas City’s Welcoming Congregations. Brad Osborn has compiled a list of all of these congregations, and you can find their information at: http://www.campkc.com/campkc-content.php?Page_ID=1563.

Even though many of these events are for adults, there are great resources in Kansas City for our LGBTQIA youth. The youth program called Passages has events every Wednesday and Saturday evening. We have their information and other youth resources listed in an LGBTQIA Youth Resources link on the home page at www.campkc.com.

Of course, this is only what I know about. I can’t be everywhere, so if your organization or business does something for the holidays that I haven’t mentioned, let me know so I can give you some kudos in our January issue and make sure we help you promote it next year.

From all of us at Camp, we wish our readers, advertisers and all of our LGBT friends and allies a very happy holiday season and Happy New Year. We look forward to continuing to be a part of this great community in 2012.
