LGBT Disabled Peer Support Group to Meet Monthly
July 29, 2010
by Bradley Osborn
A new peer-to-peer support group has begun to meet, with the goal of connecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender disabled people with others who identify as disabled and LGBT. Sponsored by The Whole Person (www.thewholeperson.org), a nonprofit organization that helps people with disabilities live independently, the group will meet at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, 4501 Walnut St., Kansas City, Mo.
Nine people attended the July 12 meeting, and after an icebreaker, the staff introduced guest Chai Jindasurat, outreach and education coordinator of the Kansas City Anti-Violence Project (kcavp.org). The discussion topics included participants’ expectations of these meetings; opportunities for rural gay persons with disabilities; coming out as LGBT, disabled or as an ally; physical access to social and community venues; and how to let others know about the new regular gathering.
The meetings will be open to queer persons with disabilities and their allies. Members of the support group will ultimately decide its agenda. Confidentiality is paramount, and anything said within the peer-led group is to be held as private by those attending.
