2010 Pride Parade Cancelled
May 27, 2010
by John Long
The Show Me Pride Parade scheduled for June 6 has been cancelled. This only affects the Sunday morning parade. The Festival is still on as scheduled at River Berkley Riverfront Park.
As Camp reported in the 2010 PrideGuide available throughout greater Kansas City, the Pride festival had to suddenly move to a new location of Richard Berkley Riverfront Park, from the former location of Penn Valley Park. This move was required due to Penn Valley Park becoming unusable after the recent rainstorms and mud destruction caused by the Rockfest concert.
Although the parade had been absent from the Pride festival for several years, the Pride committee had worked for months on securing all permits and planning a Parade route to the Penn Valley Park. The committee was hoping they could schedule a new parade route to Richard Berkley Riverfront Park. However in the less than two weeks before the Pride weekend, Rick Bumgardner, President of Gay Pride reports that it simply became impossible to secure permits and make all arrangements for a new parade route.
Bumgardner said that his executive committee regrets having to make this decision, but they are now working on updating the Sunday schedule of events with even more to replace the early morning schedule formerly allocated for the parade. He also reports that they are now notifying all individuals, organizations and businesses that had previously signed up for the parade.
Look to the group’s website for updated information on the entire June 4-6 Festival and the entire May 30 – June 6 Pride week, www.gaypridekc.com. Rick Bumgardner can also be reached by email at: president@gaypridekc.com.
