“God vs. Gay” author will speak at LikeMe Lighthouse
2/21/2012 7:00 pm-9:00 pm
Scholar and activist Jay Michaelson will make a stop in Kansas City on February 21. The author of “God vs. Gay: The Religious Case for Equality” will be at LikeMe Lighthouse at 7:00 p.m. for conversation and reception.
In “God vs. Gay,” Michaelson challenges the myth that the Bible forbids homosexuality, claiming that that misreading is responsible for divisive and painful conflict. He argues that, using proper exegesis, the Judeo-Christian scriptures not only do not prohibit same-sex intimacy, but in fact honor the values inherent within the concept of equality for sexual minorities.

Project Equality's 2012 Diversity and Inclusion Summit
2/24/2012 8:15 am-4:00 pm
from the organizer:
====
Registration begins at 7:30, the summit will run from 8:15 to 4:00. Lunch and our speaker Senator Jolie Justus will begin at noon. The entire event will be held at Metropolitan Community College at Penn Valley Campus.
====
Leaders throughout history have taken huge steps toward equality and inclusion in the United States, but even today, there are still major disparities to be tackled in race, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexual orientation and age.
With this challenge in mind, Project Equality’s Diversity and Inclusion Summit will bring together leaders from the civic, education, health care, business, banking, legal, law enforcement, nonprofit, religious and government communities to continue the journey toward full inclusion. The summit will take place from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Metropolitan Community College's Education Center.
"It's hard to believe that we're still facing divisions like this in our society in 2012," said Kirk Perucca, president of Project Equality and longtime inclusion activist. "It's more important than ever to bring leaders and like-minded activists together to keep looking for ways to bridge these gaps."
Kansas City Mayor Sly James is the summit’s keynote speaker, with Missouri Sen. Jolie Justus providing luncheon remarks. Summit speakers from the areas of employment, education, health care and economic development will offer their assessment on the state of diversity and inclusion, and discuss strategies to move forward. Confirmed speakers:
Rochelle Rollins, Ph.D., MPH, director of the division of policy and data for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health
Dorothy Witherspoon, regional administrator for the Women’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor
Patricia Brown-Dixon, regional director of the Small Business Administration
Bernardo Ramirez, executive director of the Hispanic Economic Development Corporation
Project Equality unites the corporate, nonprofit, education and religious communities to create a force for equality, justice and fairness, working collaboratively to spotlight the best regional resources to empower fairness in ournation. For more information, visit projectequality.org.

PROMO Equality Day 2012
Equality Day allows individuals the opportunity to talk with Missouri legislators face-to-face about the important issues facing our community. Protecting LGBT Missourians from employment and housing discrimination, safeguarding LGBT youth from bullying in their schools, and standing up for LGBT parents and their families, are but a few issues that represent our struggle in Missouri.
